Category: The Big Questions

My latest post gives a taste of a major town in Northern Ghana (Tamale)… but does not by any means give a complete picture of life in a “third-world” country.

What images, feelings, and thoughts come to your mind when you think of a developing country? Where do these ideas come from? (experience? media? news? anything else?) Feel free to be specific in your answers!

Last year, the Canadian government redistributed foreign aid money meant for “poverty reduction” to South American countries with which Canada was seeking trade relationships. This meant focusing aid away from African countries where extreme poverty is more dire. To what extent should Canada’s poverty-reduction budget be used to benefit Canadian society & economy, versus fulfilling Canada’s global responsibilities as a nation?

Where do we draw the line when wanting to create change? How do we define international development from imposing our own values on other cultures?
